The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has raised concerns over the ongoing developments surrounding the Adani Airport Holdings Limited’s Privately Initiated Proposal (PIP) for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). During a members, KAWU expressed alarm over the activities linked to the Adani PIP, warning that failure to address these issues could disrupt the temporary industrial peace currently in place.
Moss Ndiema, Secretary General of KAWU, highlighted some issues of concern that have emerged in recent weeks which were raised by Union raised by Union members.
“One of the primary concerns raised by our union members is the presence of unidentified individuals, purportedly Adani employees or their agents, who have been seen moving around JKIA in the company of senior Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) security personnel.” Stated Ndiema
“ These individuals have reportedly been engaging in secretive activities, including photographing various installations and conducting stock assessments, without any official communication from the authorities. This has created suspicion and unease among JKIA employees.” He continued to say.
The union also criticized the ongoing stakeholder engagements related to the Adani PIP, labeling them as “sham engagements.” They had previously requested that these engagements be put on hold pending the receipt and review of all relevant documents, information, and materials related to the proposal. While some documents have been provided, the union maintains that they have yet to receive the full set of required documents. Without this crucial information, the Union argues that the stakeholder engagements cannot yield meaningful results.
Additionally , he stated that a delegation of 16 senior managers from KAA and other public servants is scheduled to fly to India on a mission related to the Adani PIP.
“This is an attempt to progress the sale of JKIA to Adani despite widespread public and worker opposition to the deal. This move disregards the union’s earlier decision to postpone a planned strike in favor of resolving the dispute through dialogue.” Ndiema Emphasized.
Given these developments, KAWU has now issued demands aimed at addressing the situation, which include: An immediate halt to the secret and unexplained activities by Adani employees or agents at JKIA and related installations, Suspension of the ongoing stakeholder engagements until all requested documents are provided, allowing for thorough scrutiny and informed contributions by the union.
They also demanded for the cancellation of the planned trip to India by the KAA delegation until the public participation process is completed and Kenyans have signaled their approval of the project and that the Union has given the authorities a seven-day ultimatum, effective 2nd September, to meet these demands. If the conditions are not met, the union has vowed to reinstate the strike action without further notice.
The union’s stance underscores the growing tension surrounding the Adani PIP deal, with potential implications for industrial relations and the operations at JKIA.
