The Civil Society of Kenya has thrown its weight behind the Tumaini Initiative for Peace in South Sudan, emphasizing its commitment to supporting peace and stability in the war-torn nation. During a meeting held at Ufungamano Hall in Nairobi on Monday, civil society leaders from various organizations voiced their approval of the Tumaini Initiative as a critical step toward restoring hope and lasting peace in South Sudan.
Speaking at the meeting, representatives from the Civil Society of Kenya highlighted the urgent need for sustained dialogue and inclusive political processes that prioritize the welfare of South Sudanese citizens. They called on all stakeholders, including the South Sudanese government, opposition groups, and international partners, to fully commit to the Tumaini Initiative as a means of achieving lasting peace.
“We applaud Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, for exercising leadership in hosting and facilitating the Tumaini Initiative and call on him to deepen the support for South Sudan’s leaders to reach a peaceful political settlement in the interest of their people and the region. Kenya cannot do this alone, and we therefore urge President Ruto to invite the region and the international community to support the Tumaini Initiative to successfully end the conflicts in South Sudan.” Read the statement
The group further stated that they are proud of the leading role that Kenya together with the rest of Africa and the wider international community play in accompanying the people of South Sudan in this historic journey towards realization of regional peace and development in East Africa.
“South Sudan’s journey of nationhood started with a lot of hope and opportunities not only for South Sudanese but also for the region and the continent. The guns fell silent, millions of South Sudanese who were refugees in the region returned home, schools reopened, trade began to flourish, and the dream of a prosperous South Sudanese nation was within reach. Unfortunately, those hopes and aspirations were quickly dashed by continuous violent political crisis and conflicts resulting in increased insecurity, economic crisis, and weak institutions.” The statement continued to read
The Civil Society of Kenya also emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict, including issues of governance, human rights, and economic development. They urged the international community to continue providing support to South Sudan in its efforts to rebuild and achieve sustainable peace.
“South Sudan further faces the challenges of climate change, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. Despite these difficulties, South Sudanese remain resilient. We are confident that there is hope for their country through their relentless search for lasting peace. We appeal to all the leaders of South Sudan in their various capacities in government and opposition, to sincerely respond to the needs of their people and make the compromises and sacrifices necessary to achieve sustainable peace. The guns must fall silent to give way for honest dialogue and peaceful political process devoid of threats and malicious intents.” They stated.
The Tumaini Initiative, which aims to foster a peaceful political process in South Sudan, has been gaining momentum as a viable path to ending the protracted conflict that has plagued the country for years. Kenyan civil society groups underscored the importance of regional and international cooperation in ensuring the success of this initiative.
As the Tumaini Initiative continues to gain traction, the solidarity expressed by the Civil Society of Kenya underscores the critical role that regional actors play in supporting peace efforts in South Sudan. The hope is that with continued support, the initiative will pave the way for a new chapter of peace and stability in the country.
