The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) is a specialized Government medical logistics provider for Ministries of Medical Services/Public Health-supported health facilities and programmes in Kenya. It plays a key role in ensuring delivery of medical supplies to every door step of a health facility.
We all haven’t forgotten the 2020 scandal where kemsa was linked to. The organization had issues with COVID-19 kits logistics. This was after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission reported a criminalized behavior. The question is, how long are we going to get out of the jaws of corruption? Today, the Global Fund a United Nations organization, based in Switzerland has revealed new details on another scandal at kemsa. From thr report, 908,000 nets have gone missing, 1.1 million condoms and Tuberculosis drugs that are approximated to cost 10 millions are no where to be traced in the warehouse. It’s also reported that most of the drugs had expired, yet some facilities didn’t hve enough medicine for the patients.
Corruption and scandals have been the rhythm of our nation in many sections. The question is, who and how will they deliver us? When will we realize a nation free from corruption? In most cases the medical supplies are donated to our nation from US, France, Germany and Japan. How do they perceive Kenya when such devastating stories land on their tables? How will they trust a partnership with Kenya? With such questions we are only painting ourselves black.
Kenyans should collectively champion to exist in a corruption free environment. The Ministry of Health should device a way of ensuring the private sectors do not interfere with the public sector. This will bring to an end scenarios where drugs are stolen from public facilities and be sold to private ones.
Anyone who will or intends to engage in a corrupt exercise should face the law with hefty measures taken against them. We have witnessed those accused walking scort free and this has made it normal, hence cultivating and growing such a bad culture. Kenya is one and it’s our business. If we bring down all the donors in the health sector, how will the HIV/AIDS, TB and even malaria patients be like? We must say no to corruption and learn to uphold integrity always.
The EACC should be vigilant and ensure the corrupt persons are served justice accordingly. We are losing a nation and morals to few individuals who want to better themselves. We should condemn amd reject projects associated with any corruption case, that’s our responsibility as Kenyans at large.
Lastly KEMSA should be militarized to bring order and sanity in this organization. Most of those projects under the military are doing well because of the high discipline and ability to be accountable. KEMSA is no exceptional to be operated fully by the military. This is the most sure way of maintaining our relationships with various donors.
