Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has offered a response to claims made in a recent newspaper article about Kenya’s role in the Sudan conflict, saying that the government felt it was necessary to clear the air and give a full account of the situation. He started by outlined the background of the conflict in Sudan, pointing to economic troubles and political unrest that began in 2019.
“The removal of Omar al-Bashir sparked a fragile transitional process under military leadership. This arrangement later fell apart during the 2021 coup, paving the way for a power struggle that has since led to a full blown war between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces,” he stated.
He noted that by early this year, millions had been displaced and many more lacked food, medicine, and basic car, towns like Khartoum and Darfur suffering the most.
Turning to Kenya’s involvement, Mwaura firmly denied any suggestion that the country was acting outside its peacekeeping mandate. He said Kenya has always pushed for dialogue and played a neutral role through regional bodies like IGAD and the African Union.
“Kenya helped midwife the 2005 peace deal and has remained a key player in efforts to bring stability to Sudan,” he said.
He added that President William Ruto has met with both sides in the conflict in Nairobi and has led regional talks aimed at ending the violence. Kenya has also pledged financial support for relief efforts and continues to work with international partners on long-term solutions.
“Our position is simple, we do not support unconstitutional takeovers. We believe in peaceful solutions, and we remain committed to helping Sudan find its own path forward,” the government spokesperson added.
He concluded by mentioning Kenya’s refugee support policy, which he said is now being looked at by other countries as a model, promising that the government would keep the public informed as more developments unfold.
