The Kenya Livestock Producers Association (KLPA) has expressed its enthusiastic support for the nomination of Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja as the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. This announcement follows the recent nomination by President William Ruto, a move that has been met with widespread approval within the agricultural sector.
In a statement, the association lauded the president’s decision, highlighting Dr. Karanja’s deep understanding of the challenges faced by livestock producers and his commitment to addressing those issues.
They noted that Dr. Karanja’s appointment is a significant step towards realizing the potential of Kenya’s livestock industry. His expertise will be invaluable in shaping policies that support farmers, enhance productivity, and promote the welfare of livestock, they observed.
“We have noted that Dr. Karanja started his career at the junior rank of an Extension Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and rose to the position of Planning Officer in the same ministry, public service has its nuances and some Cabinet Secretaries have in the past found it hard to discharge their mandate due to lack of knowledge on how the public service Operates. Dr. Karanja having worked his way up the ranks of the public service will be well equipped to seamlessly navigate around the bureaucracy and harness the expertise within the ministry,” read part of the statement.
The nomination has also been welcomed by various stakeholders within the agricultural community, who see it as a positive signal towards a more robust and progressive approach to agricultural development.
Dr. Karanja’s track record includes successful initiatives in livestock breeding, disease control, and market access, which have substantially benefited farmers and boosted the sector’s growth.
Dr. Karanja’s appointment comes at a crucial time when the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is grappling with several challenges, including the need to increase food security, improve farming practices, and address the impacts of climate change on agriculture.
His expertise is expected to bring a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to these pressing issues.
In ensuring that Kenya is food secure and also catalyzing job creation for the youths, they urged him to tackle the issue of access to quality affordable farm inputs,provision of quality advisory services,access to affordable credit for farmers, climate change and establishing market linkages for farmers
KLPA has pledged its full support to Dr. Karanja and looks forward to collaborating with the Ministry to implement strategies that will drive the sector forward.
“We are optimistic that under Dr. Karanja’s leadership, we will see significant advancements in the livestock sector. His vision aligns with our goals of promoting sustainable farming practices and ensuring the prosperity of our farmers,” it continued to read
They added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has the greatest potential, of all the Ministries, to create opportunities for the youth and agriculture has been recognized as one of the five pillars of the Bottom up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)and its the foundation of civilization and any stable economy,that If we get it right in Agriculture, everything else will follow suit. The sector has the potential to create Over a million job opportunities across the various valuechains from farm to fork, stating that Kenya spends over 3 billion US dollar every year on food imports, majorly on products that we can be produced locally.
As Dr. Karanja prepares to take on his new role, the agricultural community remains hopeful that his leadership will herald a new era of growth and development for Kenya’s agriculture and livestock industry.
