Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry, Salim Mvurya, officially opened the National Validation Workshop on the Kenya Quality Policy in Nairobi. The event brought together stakeholders from various sectors to validate the draft Quality Policy that aims to bolster the country’s standards infrastructure.
Speaking during the official opening, the CS underscored the critical role of quality standards in enhancing the competitiveness of Kenyan products in the global market.
He emphasized that the adoption and implementation of robust quality standards are essential for fostering industrial growth, protecting consumers, and driving the country’s economic development.
“Our journey towards industrialization and economic prosperity hinges on the quality of products and services we offer.
This policy is not just a document; it’s a blueprint for ensuring that Kenyan goods and services meet international standards, thereby increasing our market share both locally and globally,” He stated.
He further highlighted the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to developing the Quality Policy, noting that it should address the needs of all stakeholders, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), large corporations, and consumers, urging participants to provide constructive feedback to ensure that the final policy is both practical and forward-looking.
“The Development of the Draft Kenya Quality Policy that we seek to validate today has been guided by the laid down national policy development guidelines that emphasizes on the need to consult the stakeholders on matters affecting them. This workshop is therefore a continuation of Stakeholders consultation.” Noted Mvurya
Mvurya also pointed out that quality standards are vital for the realization of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the government’s agenda to position Kenya as a manufacturing hub in the region. He noted that the implementation of the Quality Policy would lead to better compliance with international trade regulations, reducing barriers to exports, and increasing the country’s global competitiveness.
“The Kenya Quality Infrastructure comprising public and private organizations, policies, laws, and regulations is aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of goods and services. The Policy will therefore greatly assist Kenya in the achievement of the aspirations of Vision 2030 of a globally competitive country providing high quality products to local and international markets while ensuring social, environmental, and consumer protection. Let us remember that it is a tool for economic transformation. By upholding the highest standards, we can unlock new markets, attract foreign investment, and create jobs for our people,” He added.
The workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, industry associations, consumer groups, and development partners. The feedback from the workshop will be incorporated into the final version of the Kenya Quality Policy, which is expected to be adopted later this year.
The Kenya Quality Policy is designed to harmonize and strengthen the country’s quality infrastructure, including standardization, metrology, accreditation, and conformity assessment. It seeks to ensure that all products and services produced or consumed in Kenya are safe, reliable, and meet both local and international standards.
He concluded his speech by reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the Quality Policy and urged all stakeholders to collaborate in its successful rollout.
“This is a collective effort, and we must all play our part in ensuring that the Kenya Quality Policy becomes a cornerstone of our nation’s industrial and economic strategy,” Mvurya noted
The validation workshop marks a significant step towards finalizing the policy, which is expected to have a lasting impact on Kenya’s trade and industrial landscape.
