Kenya positions itself as Africa’s innovation powerhouse with launch of Nova garage

Kenya has taken another bold step in cementing its place as a continental leader in innovation following the launch of Nova Garage, a Pan-African platform designed to nurture and showcase the next generation of tech entrepreneurs.
The initiative comes ahead of the highly anticipated Africa Forward Summit scheduled for May 11–12, 2026, in Nairobi, and is expected to draw innovators, investors, policymakers, and corporate leaders from across Africa and beyond.
Spearheaded by the French-African Foundation and the Autonomous Advancement Initiative in collaboration with Concerto and Nuvision, Nova Garage aims to provide a dynamic space for young innovators to present solutions addressing some of Africa’s most pressing challenges.
Organized under the High Patronage of President William Ruto, the platform reflects Kenya’s broader ambition to position itself as a hub for technology-driven growth, particularly among the youth.
Speaking during the launch, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’Oei emphasized the need to shift focus toward empowering builders of Africa’s future.
“We have spent decades speaking for Africa’s future. Perhaps it is time we made room for those who are actually building it,” he said.
Empowering youth through innovation
The launch of Nova Garage aligns with ongoing government efforts to create opportunities for young people through innovation, entrepreneurship, and access to capital. Among these initiatives is the Nyota Fund, which is aimed at supporting youth-led enterprises by providing financing and capacity-building opportunities.
The government has also been pushing forward policies to strengthen the digital economy, promote start-ups, and expand access to funding for small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which are driven by young entrepreneurs.
By integrating such initiatives with platforms like Nova Garage, Kenya is seeking to create a robust ecosystem where youth innovation can thrive and scale.
Nairobi: The Silicon Savannah
Hosting Nova Garage in Nairobi further underscores the city’s reputation as Africa’s “Silicon Savannah.” Over the years, Kenya has built a vibrant tech ecosystem, currently home to more than 400 active start-ups spanning sectors such as fintech, agritech, health tech, and clean energy.
Recent data indicates that Kenya attracted close to $1 billion in venture capital funding in the past year, highlighting growing investor confidence in the country’s innovation landscape.
Experts say this momentum places Kenya at the center of Africa’s digital transformation, with platforms like Nova Garage expected to amplify visibility for local talent on the global stage.
Opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs
At the heart of Nova Garage is a focus on young innovators. A total of 15 entrepreneurs under the age of 35 will be selected through a competitive, pan-African application process.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to showcase their solutions before an international audience, including investors and policymakers attending the summit.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that their projects have moved beyond the idea stage, with a functional prototype or minimum viable product ready for live demonstration. The solutions must also address clearly defined societal or economic challenges.
The application deadline has been set for April 23, 2026, at 5:00 PM (EAT).
Driving global partnerships
Beyond supporting individual entrepreneurs, Nova Garage is expected to strengthen collaboration between African and international stakeholders, particularly in fostering ties between Africa and France.
Organizers say the platform will facilitate high-impact connections between innovators, corporations, and investors, creating pathways for funding, mentorship, and market expansion.
This cross-continental collaboration is seen as critical in unlocking Africa’s innovation potential, particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and green technology.
A vision beyond the Summit
While the Africa Forward Summit will serve as the official launchpad, organizers stress that Nova Garage is not a one-off event but a long-term platform aimed at sustaining growth and innovation.
Central to this vision is the introduction of the Autonomous Advancement Initiative, a framework that seeks to reposition African countries as active participants and co-owners in the development of future technologies.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of sovereignty in the digital age, advocating for African nations to play a leading role in shaping and controlling critical technological infrastructure.

As Kenya continues to invest in youth-driven innovation through programs like the Nyota Fund and platforms such as Nova Garage, the country is signaling a clear commitment to building a future powered by technology and entrepreneurship.
For many young Africans, Nova Garage represents more than just an opportunity to showcase ideas it is a gateway to global networks, investment, and the chance to shape the continent’s economic future.
With Nairobi set to host some of the brightest minds in tech this May, all eyes will be on Kenya as it drives the next wave of African innovation.
