Kenya Unveils Elite Training To Hunt Down Blockchain And Crypto Criminals

By MKT Correspondent

Kenya has stepped boldly into the future of crime-fighting with the launch of a specialised training programme aimed at tackling the rising wave of blockchain and cryptocurrency-related offences.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) yesterday unveiled the Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Investigation Training Module, a first-of-its-kind initiative that signals the country’s growing determination to outpace tech-savvy criminal networks.

The programme was launched at the DCI headquarters, where Ms. Rosemary Kuraru, Director of the National Forensic Laboratory, represented the DCI Director.

In her address, she stressed the urgency for law enforcement agencies to adapt swiftly as criminals shift to digital spaces that offer anonymity and borderless transactions.

“Technology is evolving at a rapid pace, and so must our response,” she said. “Criminals are exploiting virtual currencies and decentralised platforms to mask illegal activities. This training ensures that we are not only catching up but staying ahead,” she said.

The European Union (EU) is fully funding and technically supporting the initiative, reinforcing its long-standing security partnership with Kenya. Through this collaboration, DCI officers and partner agencies will gain advanced skills in tracing blockchain transactions, analysing digital wallets, investigating crypto-linked crimes, and applying global standards in digital forensics.

Ms. Kuraru lauded the EU for investing in capacity building and helping Kenya strengthen its operational readiness in an era where cyber-enabled crimes are growing more complex.

The training marks a significant step in Kenya’s efforts to position itself as a regional leader in modern policing and cybersecurity, enhancing its ability to detect, investigate, and dismantle digital crime networks.
