Kiambu County Introduces Monthly Clean-Up Exercise

Kiambu County Government has embarked on a monthly clean-up exercise that will involve all county staff members in collaboration with the community to promote a clean environment.
The Clean-up exercise will be conducted every last Friday of every month beginning next Friday, February 24, 2023 from 8:00 am to 12 noon.
According to area Governor Kimani Wamatangi, the purpose of this and other subsequent clean-up exercises is to encourage the county staff and the community to maintain a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
“I am calling upon every resident of Kiambu county to participate in the exercise wherever they are since it will be happening in all the 12 sub-counties, we have dubbed the initiative ‘Mazingira bora, Jukumu Letu’,” he said.
The Governor further urged all stakeholders to join efforts and help to make the initiative more sustainable which will involve garbage collection, unblocking drainage systems and sweeping.
“We are mostly targeting market places, roadsides, bus stages, public parks and urban centers because we believe a clean environment is a healthy environment for everyone,” added the county boss.
Speaking to journalists at his office NEMA County Director Mr Steven Wambua lauded the efforts made by the County Government in waste management and encouraged the county to move from waste disposal/dumping to waste recovery.
“We are encouraging the county government to come up with a waste recovery center where the recyclable can be recovered like plastics, cartons and paper and be sold hence creating economic gain,” Wambua said.
The NEMA county director who cited that most dump sites in the county are already filled to the brim said there is need to concentrate on waste recovery so that what goes to the dumping sites is only what cannot be used.
“There is only one licensed waste recovery center in the county ‘Taka Taka Solutions’ which is at Kiambaa sub-county, if the county Government can come up with more in every sub county we will be going in the right direction in maters waste management,” cited Wambua.
Wambua further said that for the monthly clean up exercise to be sustainable all waste generators should be involved and by-laws made from the county level that will deal with individuals and landlords who practice improper waste disposal.
