The CS, Governor and PS at Kirigiti Stadium yesterday

Cabinet secretary for sports Salim Mvurya has said that Kirigiti international stadium completion process will begin from next week and end within 45 days so that the football pitch can be ready to host trainings for the African Nations Championships (CHAN) competitions to be held in August this year.
Mvurya speaking in Kirigiti International Stadium in Kirigiti shopping center in Kiambu town accompanied by Principal secretary Sports Peter K.Tum and Governor Kimani Wamatangi, Riabai ward MCA Hezron Gachui including officials from the ministry while on a review of the progress of the stadium said that the sporting facility has been identified as one of the training grounds of CHAN competitions
” Most of the key sections have been done very well like the changing rooms, VVIP and VIP sections, canopies and terraces and a lot of good work has been done,” he said.
He said the government was concerned that the stadium had taken too long without operationalization and was prudent to meet the leadership of Kiambu and unlock the issues that underlie the completion of the stadium.
“The good news is that we have paid part of the money to the contractor and next week we will be paying the final account and what we have agreed is that sports Kenya will gain access, the county government will gain access because we need to do the field to FIFA and CAF standards,” he said.
He said next week there will be a team that will carry out landscaping, plant grass and work together with the contractor to make sure the grass is properly irrigated so that in the next one month it will have flourished.
“The government will now gain access as previously there was that conflict even though we have paid part of the money in the last one and a half weeks to the contractor and we have asked the contractor and public works to work together to give us the final account so that we can pay the remaining amount of the money but from today sports Kenya will be accessing the stadium,” he said.
He said the access roads to the stadium will be rehabilitated as the completion date nears.
The CS however said that the government is looking for sustainable way of management of the stadiums in the country.
“We are doing projects in the city like talanta sports infrastructure in the country and as a ministry we are now onboard to work on a concept that we are going to see how we will manage and maintain our sports facilities.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi said that the national government has agreed to come to a final commitment of Kirigiti International stadium which has stalled.
” It is an issue we have gone round and round trying to solve, having this great investment operationalized, the people of Kiambu and indeed the entire sporting fraternity and even in the national this assets has been awaiting it’s value as to why it was created,” Wamatangi said.
He said that commitment by the government to have it completed and opened is a huge milestone when it would be able to make useful usage.
” This is an asset that the people of Kiambu do not get benefit from. It is a huge injection economic wellbeing of our people as there are traders around the stadium and including bringing tourists as it is an international stadium,” he said.
He added as a county government they had reached a consensus with the adjacent Kiambu golf club which has got land to cede for the construction of a five star hotel which will give twin benefit to the stadium.
He said that the sporting facility will be of benefit to some of the football teams who play in the league titles as they have access to Thika stadium.
He requested the ministry to fast tract the completion of other sports facilities in the stadium such as the swimming pool, ball pitches and athletic track so as to benefit the sports men and women.
He however said as the fast tracking of the completion of the stadium is going on it will go hand in hand in completion of the amphitheater that was put up by the county government inside the stadium.
” As county government we are going to embark on completing the amphitheater so that our people can benefit from the facility and also we have planned to have set aside places where some cafeterias and other businesses put up around the facility so that we create job opportunities for the people,” he said.
The Principal Secretary said that they have put a lot of resources in the stadiums across the country and the final account will dictate what will be spent for the completion of the Kirigiti stadium.
He however said that the stalled Karatu Stadium is also awaiting the contractor final account so that the funds can be released for the completion of the stadium.
