Kirinyaga county has been represented by two governors since the advent of devolution and is bracing for a third one come 2027.
The two, Joseph Ndathi and Anne Waiguru both hail from Gichugu constituency. Mwea constituency that has the largest voter base feels that it’s their turn to produce a county chief.
It’s perhaps out of this urge that a recent opinion poll put former Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri ahead of the pack.

The poll carried out by Strawpoll between November 15 and 17 got Ndambiri a rating of 20.63% of the 26,018 of the voters polled.
He was followed closely former area Woman Representative Purity Wangui Ngirici who garnered 18.33% of the vote.
Incumbent Senator Kamau Murango followed closely with 17.40 percent of the vote.
Ndambiri who served as the deputy governor of Anne Waiguru between 2017 and 2022 is the Party Leader of Democratic Republic Movement will probably face the biggest change from Murango who is a close confidant of DCP leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
However, yesterday, Ndambiri said that his party was a member of the United Opposition and hence not in direct competition with DCP and believes he would fly the opposition’s flag as he was more experienced, focused and resilient.

Other aspirants polled included former Interior Ministry Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho who received a rating of 14.84 percent and is believed to be Jubilee party’s candidate in the gubernatorial race come 2027.
Two incumbent Members of Parliament George Kariuki of Ndia and Kirinyaga Central’s Gachoki Gitari were mentioned as serious contenders with former getting 16.33 per cent while the latter polled 6.36 per cent.
According to the poll, 6.1 percent of the voters are yet to decide on a suitable, a number that can easily tilt the outcome with everything remaining constant.
