Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) is set to increase the monthly proceeds for its affiliated farmers.
It will be an early Christmas gift for the tea farmers nationally as plans are almost complete to increase the monthly income from the current KSh21 per kilogram of delivered green tea leaves.
The agency is expected to announce the new price next month.
Yesterday, the agency director representing Nyeri County zone Michael Kamau Ngatia confirmed that plans are at an advanced stage to increase the monthly income.
speaking at the Iria-ini Tea Factory in Othaya during the Annual General Meeting, Ngatia disclosed that the new payments will be announced by mid next month.
Ngatia noted that serious initiatives have been taken per factory to ensure the production costs is reduced. This will lead to more revenue.
Since last year, the Kenya Kwanza Government has made radical reforms which has led to many changes in the sector. The benefits have led to farmers increasing their income in the sector.
During the meeting, the factory chairman Gachoki Wairia said the company has been able to institute cost control on austerity measures which is meant to mitigate against cost escalation and revenue linkages.
Such measures include modernization of company’s infrastructure, improvements of factory administration aspects to enhance efficiency and improvement to increase workflow and efficiency in the tea processing at lower costs.
The factory is keen on establishing an Orthodox Value Addition Project to cushion against shocks associated with the traditional CTC market.
He called upon farmers and other stakeholders to support the efforts and interventions through team work and cooperation.
