Kazi Mtaani Programme

Over 6,800 youths in Laikipia County have commenced the third phase of the Kazi Mtaani Programme being initiated by the National Government.
The figure is almost double those engaged in 2020 where a total of 3,615 youths were involved in rehabilitating infrastructure at the grassroots in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.
Laikipia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri, while launching the program at Nanyuki Central Park, said the work this time will also involve repainting of buildings at public institutions and planting of trees.
“By engaging the youths in repainting buildings, it will be an avenue for them to gain useful skills that can assist them earn income in life. We are asking public institutions like schools to purchase paints and we shall provide them with free labour,” said Mr Kanyiri.
He disclosed that wages would be Sh450 per day with the supervisors taking home Sh505.
More than 3,000 youths had gathered during the launch of this phase, some who had missed the chance hoping to be absorbed into the programme.
During this engagement whose timeline was not disclosed, the youths will also be trained on savings and entrepreneurship.
The Kazi Mtaani was launched in the height of Covid-19 to where the country’s economy was adversely affected through loss of jobs, low businesses and salary cuts.
The Government had set aside Sh5 Billion for the project where the money was sent directly to an individual’s M-Pesa account.
