Makutano Market traders in municipality ward, North Imenti constituency Meru County held elections to vote for leaders who will be in charge of the market.
Elections in the busy market are held every three years.
The following were Samuel Gitonga was elected Chairman, Elijoy Kagwiria treasurer, Kagwiria Caroline as Secretary, John Kimathi was elected Vice Chairman, Geoffrey Kimani as Vice Secretary, Brian Mutuma Committee member.
Samuel Gitonga who was elected chairman of the four storey market said his victory was attributed to God as he had prayed and was able to retain the sit for the fourth time.
“I also want to thank the people for electing me once again i will continue serving them well as a humble and listening leader my victory was not easy this time round but i thank God and those who believed in me,” he said.
Gitonga said he will work hard to make sure no traders are harassed intimidated or treated unfairly.
He promised to work with the county government to better the welfare of the market.
He said he will seek an audience with Meru governor Mutuma M’ethingia on some of the grievances in the market.
Brian Mutuma committee member representing the youth said he will try to pick new ideas and agendas from youth to better the market to all traders that will uplift the welfare and create a safe environment in market and attract more customers.
“I want to urge the youth to come and start businesses even in the market they should not wait for employment,” he said.
Kimani who was elected vice secretary thanked the people for ensuring there is democracy,he said they will deliver their pledges to traders.
Rose Karimi a trader at the market said he is happy that the elections were free and fair and peaceful.
“I urge those who lost to accept and move on and those who won they should work hard to deliver their promises” Karimi said.
