The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has assured commuters that public transport will operate normally across the country on June 25, as Kenya marks two years since the protests that shook the nation in 2024.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, MOA President Albert Karakacha said the association is committed to keeping services running smoothly while prioritising the safety of passengers, transport workers and the general public.
Karakacha acknowledged the weight of the occasion. The association, he said, stands in solidarity with families affected by the events of June 25, 2024, but underlined that public transport carries a responsibility that cannot be set aside.
“We believe that justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law remain essential to national healing,” he said. “At the same time, public transport is an essential service, and our members will continue operations responsibly and professionally.”
MOA called on matatu owners, drivers, conductors and support staff to remain calm, exercise restraint and carry out their duties within the law. The association reaffirmed its respect for the constitutional rights of all citizens while stressing the importance of public safety and order.
It strongly condemned violence, vandalism, arson, looting and destruction of property, warning that such actions harm businesses, destroy livelihoods and endanger lives. “The safety and wellbeing of passengers, transport workers, businesses and the public remain our foremost priority,” the statement read.
Karakacha urged citizens, community leaders, civil society organisations, businesses and government agencies to embrace peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue as the country reflects on a defining moment in its recent history.
MOA said its members will remain vigilant and cooperate with relevant authorities throughout the day to ensure smooth operations β a commitment that should bring considerable relief to the millions of Kenyans who depend on matatus every single day.
