Opposition alliance takes education and economic growth agenda to Murang’a clergy as 2027 campaign intensifies
By Jane Njeri
Opposition leaders Fred Matiang’i and Ndindi Nyoro yesterday committed to providing free basic education at senior secondary level from January 2028, including school lunch programmes, as they deepened their political outreach in Murang’a County.
The pledge was made at a clergy meeting hosted by Anglican Church of Kenya Bishop of Murang’a South Julius Karanu in Kenol, where the two leaders outlined an opposition agenda centred on education access and inclusive economic growth.
“Together with Dr Matiang’i, we committed on the opposition agenda of free basic education starting with senior secondaries from January 2028,” Nyoro said. “Learners will also take lunch in school.”
The Kiharu MP framed inclusive economic growth as a parallel priority, signalling a broad policy platform designed to appeal to ordinary Kenyans struggling under the current cost of living. Several legislators attended, among them Anthony Kibagendi, Obadiah Barongo, Peter Kimari, Peter Weru and Joshua Toro.
The Murang’a engagement reflects a deliberate strategy of building grassroots coalitions through faith communities ahead of August 2027 — targeting a region whose electoral weight could prove decisive in any serious presidential contest.
