The All Saints Cathedral was filled with somber reflection and heartfelt tributes as several leaders, family members, and friends gathered to honor the life and legacy of former politician James Maina Wanjigi. The 92-year-old former MP and Minister, who passed away on June 28 at Nairobi Hospital, was remembered for his significant contributions to Kenya’s political and agricultural landscape.
A Life of Service
James Maina Wanjigi’s journey began in the pre-independence era when he served as an assistant agricultural extension officer in the Nyeri district. His commitment to public service was evident early on and continued throughout his life. Wanjigi’s entry into politics was marked by a significant event in Kenya’s history. Following the assassination of Tom Mboya, Wanjigi won the Kamukunji parliamentary seat in a by-election, a position he would hold for 25 years. During his tenure, he held various ministerial roles, including Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Public Works, before retiring from active politics.
