The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, through its State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Standing Committee on Shipping (ISCOS), held the 9th Assembly of Ministers meeting today in Nairobi. A key highlight of the event was the rebranding of ISCOS to the Maritime Organization for Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa (MOESNA).
The new name, MOESNA, reflects the organization’s expanded geographical scope and its enhanced mandate to unite the shipping and maritime interests of Eastern, Southern, and Northern African nations. The rebranding aims to strengthen collaboration and foster maritime development across these regions.
Ministers from 15 countries participated in the assembly, underscoring the significance of the event in promoting regional maritime cooperation. The meeting was graced by the Guest of Honor, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Hon. Salim Mvurya, who emphasized the importance of a unified approach to maritime affairs in Africa.
In his address, Hon. Mvurya highlighted the critical role of maritime activities in boosting economic growth and sustainable development. He lauded the rebranding as a strategic move to better represent the collective interests and aspirations of the member states.
“The rebranding to MOESNA marks a new chapter in our maritime journey, aiming to enhance cooperation and address the unique challenges faced by our regions, this organization will serve as a cornerstone for maritime policy development, capacity building, and regional integration.”Hon. Mvurya stated
The assembly also provided a platform for the ministers to discuss key issues affecting the maritime sector, including port development, maritime security, and environmental sustainability. The collaboration is expected to drive forward initiatives that will benefit the economies of the member countries and enhance the overall maritime infrastructure in the region.
MOESNA’s establishment is a significant step towards realizing a cohesive maritime strategy that aligns with the broader objectives of regional integration and economic development. The organization is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime affairs in Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa.
As the meeting concluded, the ministers expressed optimism about the future prospects of MOESNA and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to achieve common maritime goals. The rebranding ceremony and the discussions held at the assembly set a positive tone for the continued growth and development of the maritime sector in the region.
