Mumina Backs Recent Teachers Promotions, Cautions Against Political Interference

Isiolo County MP, Hon. Mumina Bonaya, has voiced her support for the recent teacher promotions by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). She appealed for respect for the Commission’s independence and encouraged the different arms of government to uphold fairness in public service.
During a press briefing at Parliament Buildings today, Hon. Bonaya expressed her concern regarding efforts by some leaders to pressure the TSC into reversing the promotions.
She noted that such actions could potentially hinder progress made in addressing historical inequalities, particularly in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).
“As a representative from a marginalized region, I find the opposition to these promotions not only unfair but a continuation of the long-standing discrimination against ASAL counties. For once, TSC considered the years of service, challenges, and leadership roles played by teachers in hardship areas and now some want to reverse that progress,” said Hon. Bonaya.
She pointed out that TSC had applied fair and objective standards, and for the first time, teachers in neglected areas had been acknowledged for their contributions.
“It is unfortunate that instead of celebrating this step towards equality, some are choosing to fight it. Why was there silence when these regions were continuously sidelined in previous promotions?” she questioned.
Hon. Bonaya also noted that should there be continued attempts to influence or reverse the promotions, she would consider taking appropriate legal and parliamentary steps.
“I am prepared to petition the matter before a court of law and raise it firmly on the floor of this House. I will not sit back and watch a committee tasked with oversight turn into an instrument of marginalization,” she affirmed.
She encouraged Parliament to safeguard the independence of constitutional commissions such as the TSC, stating that their autonomy is essential to maintaining public trust and promoting inclusivity.
“This is not just about teacher promotions, it is about justice, equal opportunity, and building a country where no region is left behind. The pushback we are seeing is a sad reminder of how far we still have to go,” she concluded.
