ODM faithful and city leaders gather to honour a man whose battles shaped the Kenya they inherited
By MKT Reporter
Hundreds of Nairobians gathered at Uhuru Park yesterday evening for a candlelight vigil in honour of ODM leader Raila Odinga, in a ceremony organised by the party and attended by senior officials and city leaders.
ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga and Secretary General Catherine Omanyo led the party’s delegation, joined by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja at the head of a broad-based assembly of city leaders who set aside political differences to mark the occasion together.
The vigil carried the quiet weight of genuine reflection. Candles flickered across the park as speakers recalled a political career defined less by the offices Raila sought than by the causes he refused to abandon — multiparty democracy, constitutional reform, the rights of ordinary Kenyans in moments when defending those rights came at considerable personal cost.
Much of the Kenya present at that park — its contested freedoms, its hard-won constitutional architecture, its expectation that power must answer to the people — bears the imprint of battles he chose to fight when others calculated the safer path.
Nairobi did not gather to mourn a defeat. It gathered to remember what conviction looks like, and to acknowledge, by candlelight, that some legacies are built not in office but in sacrifice.
