National Assembly’s Education Committee Holds Inaugural Meeting With CS Machogu, On Alleged Exam Cheating

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Education chaired by Julius Melly has started quizzing top officials of the relevant ministry in regards to allegations of cheating in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
Yesterday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and his Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang for the first time appeared before the House Team. In his submission, CS Machogu dismissed the exam reports as ‘unfounded and mere propaganda’.
The CS who was also accompanied by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) CEO David Njeng’ere among other officials insisted that the exercise was above board, a comment that elicited sharp reactions from members of the committee.
“What can you say about reports on certain schools in Kisii and Nyamira Counties that also happen to be your home regions, where a section of learners are alleged to have attained extra-ordinary scores?” posed the Melly.
CS Machogu explained to the committee that the good performance of some schools in the region has been maliciously blown out of proportion.
“Contrary to propaganda out there, Kisii and Nyamira counties actually had the least number of Grade As in the Nyanza region. Siaya County had the highest number of As in the Nyanza region with 72, followed by Homa Bay and Migori with 62 and Kisumu with 59. Kisii County had 51As while Nyamira County had 30As,” he revealed.
” Rumours will always be rumours. The truth will always be the truth. Misinformation will always be out there. We should all be careful not to believe propaganda, “added the CS.
Hon Melly in his closing remarks said the Committee will have another session with the top Education officials, as they seek their detailed responses on particular claims of cheating raised by stakeholders during the public hearings.
The Melly-led committee last month held public hearings in 10 select counties, as the MPs sought to establish the credibility of the widespread reports that there were massive malpractices in the past exams.
