Dozens of former Nyeri Colonial Chief Wambugu Mathangani descendants yesterday met with officials from the National Land Commission over their impending compensation.
The Commission officials led by Commissioner Esther Murugi were in Nyeri to explain to the family members the implications of a judgment that was made a few weeks ago concerning compensation of their land that is currently used by the government as an agricultural training centre which is known as Wambugu Farmers Agricultural Training Centre.
The Commission took them through the compensation process that will see them pocket millions of shillings awarded to them by the court.
Recently, the court ruled that the government should compensate them with Sh230 million plus interest, summed from December 2008 which brings the total amount to about Sh729 million.
Ms Murugi and her team met the families’ representatives at the training institute with their chairman Bishop Mathangani saying they were convinced by the explanation given over various issues.
Former Nyeri mayor Wanyaga Gathaka who is also a grandson of the former chief said the family had waited for years to be compensated, adding that they were optimistic that eventually, they will get their dues.
However, the Commission informed them that getting the money was not an easy task and they were not definite when the money would be released to them.
