National Steering Committee Meeting For Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply And Sanitation Programme

The Principal Secretary for State Department Water and Sanitation Julius Korir yesterday chaired the meeting on Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation program that brought together all Water Sector Agencies implementing the program in their areas of jurisdiction.
The agencies implementing the program gave a presentation on the status of both ongoing and completed water supply and sanitation projects in their respective regions.
Under Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), the CEO Eng. Joseph Kamau reported on the status of AfDB projects on Limuru Water Supply and Sewerage Project currently at 73.5% progress at absorption rate of 58.8%.
Progress on Water Supply works at Gatundu ongoing, Kikuyu Water Supply and Sewerage Project absorption is at 93%, Kiambu Ruaka Water and Sewerage Project, Makutano Kenol Water Supply and Sewerage Project at 87% complete.
On TANATHIWWDA, Machakos Water Supply Project is currently at 71.13% complete with absorption rate at 70%, and will serve 200,000 people in Machakos town and surrounding areas. Machakos Sewerage Project is at 82.67 progress, Mwala Cluster at 30.5% with absorption rate at 30%, and Last Mile Connectivity ( Kitui and Matuu progress at 44%.
CEO Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) Eng. Philip Gichuki while making his presentation, revealed that Chogoria Water supply project was completed and commissioned whereas Kerugoya, Chuka Water Supply project is currently at 96% complete. Marsabit Sewerage Project is 90% complete, Mandera Sewerage Project at 79% complete, Mandera Water Supply Project at 72 % complete, Meru Sewerage at 76% complete. The Decentralized Treatment Facility (DTF) for Kiawara Town is currently 72% complete, Construction of Othaya Sewerage Infrastructure at 20%, Construction of Biogas Production Domes for three Secondary schools at 10%, with Garissa, Othaya, Muranga, Isiolo water projects on course.
CEO Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) Douglas Murei gave a presentation on the status for Narok Town Sewerage and last Mile Connectivity Project, Olkalou Town Sewerage Project, Kiptogot-Kolongolo, Ugunja-Sega, Siaya-Bondo, Kilgoris Water Supply, Nandi Hills, Last Mile Connectivity project for Kakamega Town at 80%, Kapenguria-Makutano at 62% progress, Bomet-Mulot Water Supply and Sanitation project at 42% progress, Kipkarren Dam Treatment Works and Associated Pipeline at 72% progress.
Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA) Changamwe Repooling Sewerage Project stalled at 20% with absorption at 43%, Pemba Dam Water Project, Malindi Watamu Water and Sewerage Company at 93% with absorption of 72.7%
Speaking during the meeting, the Ministry of Treasury representative Michael Kahiti from Resource Mobilization program, stated that Treasury was looking forward for the successful completion of these projects without any delays.
He further reiterated that Treasury will continue to support the Ministry to succeed by coordinating and mobilizing funds for the projects’ success.
In his closing remarks, the PS thanked the National Steering Committee for Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program and urged them to fast track the projects in their respective regions and report back on progress in a timely manner.
Present during this critical meeting included Water Secretary Eng. SAO Alima, National Water Resources Director A. Mware Kinyua, Eng. Joseph Kariuki, CEO NWWDA Andrew Rage, CEO NRWWDA Edwin Rotich, LVSWWDA CEO Jackline Kemunto and CEO LVNWWDA Joel Wamalwa.
