The government has confiscated illegal powder milk worth Sh150 million, resulting in a loss of KSh52 million in taxes. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi praised the multi-agency team that led the operation, including the Kenya Dairy Board, Kenya Revenue Authority, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and National Intelligence Service, for their performance in preventing the milk from entering the market. He emphasised the need to question why milk from neighbouring countries like Uganda and Tanzania is entering the country and urged the region to review its tax regime to prevent illegal products from entering the country.
Linturi emphasised the importance of the dairy value chain as a key transformation pillar for the country’s economy. He stated that the livestock department is working tirelessly to increase milk productivity and prevent illegal milk products from entering the country. He also mentioned that President Dr. William Ruto has asked the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) to pay farmers Sh50 per litre of milk.
To ensure farmers receive good returns, the government has implemented a waiver allowing duty-free importation of products used in animal feed production, such as yellow maize and soya, to lower feed production costs and enable farmers to produce milk at a cheaper price.
Gloria Adhiambo Owino, a former pupil at Nyalgunga primary school in North Alego, Kenya, will now join Ng’iya Girls National School after being mistakenly placed at Lenana School. The girl’s father, Fredrick Owino, and mother, Margaret Awuor had appealed for government intervention to have her placed in a school to enable her to achieve her vision of becoming a doctor and lecturer in sciences. The family expressed fear that days to the reporting of Form 1, their daughter was still stranded with the boy’s school admission form, which also saw her locked out of bursary and scholarship programmes due to the anomaly.
Gloria’s father was shocked while scrutinising the admission form when he came across some of the requirements, such as long trousers as part of the uniform. Gloria’s mother, Margaret Awuor, a casual labourer, has called on the government and well-wishers to assist her daughter in pursuing her secondary education.
The family had been unable to successfully apply for bursary support due to the error, and Gloria’s mother has been encouraging her daughter to continue her education once she excels in her KCPE exam.
She was eventually assisted and secured admission at the school which was one of which she had initially selected.
Bungoma County Governor Kenneth Lusaka has urged administrators to uphold integrity and ethics in their daily tasks, warning against excessive force and legal action for cases involving humiliating residents. He announced the finalization of a service scheme for county administration officers, which will be submitted to the County Assembly for approval. Lusaka also emphasized his administration’s commitment to combating teen pregnancies and scheduled a consultative meeting with key stakeholders.
Kericho County twins Cindy Chepchirchir and Chantel Cherotich have achieved top grades in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. Despite sitting for the national examinations in different public secondary schools, the sisters scored a B minus grade of 55 points. The sisters attributed their success to group discussions and revisions of examination papers during their school holiday breaks. Cindy Chepchirchir, who studied at Cheborge Girls Secondary School in Bureti sub-county, urged students preparing for the KCSE to work hard in their classes and revise thoroughly for good grades. Chantel Cherotich, a student at Kapkenda Girls High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County, expressed her gratitude to her parents and teachers for their encouragement and prayed that she could pursue a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Their mother, Benila Chelangat, welcomed the idea of their twin daughters joining different secondary schools after completing their KCPE. She expressed her happiness to see her children pursue their degree choice course in the same university education.
