Vihiga County Executive for Social Services, Anne Desma (L), with the Acting County Commissioner (CC), Florence Sitawa, display copies of SGBV and child protection policies. The county has launched the documents, paving the way for operationalisation.
Desma said the two policies lay the legal framework for resolving the rampant gender-based abuse cases in the county, as well as ensuring child neglect, abandonment, and molestation are brought to an end. Desma stated that they are going to collaborate with partners and other stakeholders to ensure that the perpetrators are made to pay for their actions while the victims get justice.
The Dutch Embassy in Kenya has awarded a Sh8.8 million grant to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to support communities living in catchment areas of rivers that drain into Lake Baringo. The grant, which was presented to the Narosura Water Resource Users Association, aims to empower residents along the Esageri, Emining, and Narosura rivers to engage in conservation activities.
The project consists of three components: creating awareness, knowledge management, and supporting local water associations to address increasing water risks and stress. “We want to make sure that by the end of next year, we shall come back and document lessons with the rest of Kenyans so that they can embrace better water resource management practices going forward,” said the Chief Technical Advisor for World WWF, Dr. William Ojwang.
Learners at Karimamwaro Primary School in Kandara Sub-County, Murang’a County, are set to benefit from a Sh30 million infrastructure project commissioned by the M-Pesa Foundation. The project will involve renovating six classrooms (Grade 1 to Grade 6), building three new Junior Secondary classrooms, upgrading the Early Childhood Development (ECDE) Centre, and constructing a science laboratory, a fully equipped library, and separate ablution blocks for boys, girls, and staff. Additionally, the upgrade will include a water harvesting system with storage tanks to promote water conservation at the school. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu highlighted the foundation’s commitment to transforming lives through education, particularly by focusing on schools that serve the most vulnerable communities.
Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, visited the sewerage treatment plant in Ahiti-Ndomba, Mwea, to assess the progress. The project is implemented by Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA). He said the sanitation in the country has lagged behind, and the Ministry is encouraging all water projects done by the Ministry to be accompanied by a sanitation project. “It must have a sanitation component to improve our sanitation connectivity because, as of now, we are around 32 percent nationally, and we are trying to raise this. Besides centralised sewer, we’re encouraging people to have on-site sanitation facilities,” said CS. He was accompanied by among others the agency chairman Wambugu Mukundi alias Temuwa.
