The Narok Green Account Initiative (NGAI), a initiative under Compassion Kenya, has launched a campaign to empower vulnerable children and households in Transmara. The initiative aims to reduce greenhouse emissions, stop deforestation, and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested landscapes. Transmara West Assistant County Commissioner Brian Wafula welcomed the initiative, stating it will help the government achieve its goals of reducing greenhouse emissions and restoring degraded landscapes. Compassion Kenya Director Zakayo Leshao urged residents to plant more trees for prosperity and support vulnerable children in achieving their academic dreams. The initiative also encourages the public to take part in environmental sustainability by planting more trees.
Kenya’s Galana-Kulalu food security project is nearing completion, with the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) finalizing key irrigation infrastructure. The project, currently at 90% completion, aims to increase agricultural productivity; lower living costs, and creates employment for local communities. The County Implementation, Coordination and Management Committee (CICMC) chairman, Samuel Mutisya, said that with full maximisation, the country could produce 20 million bags of maize annually. Twiga Feeds is transitioning to take over the 10,000-acre model farm, which is being managed by the NIA. The project is also being connected to the national grid by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC). Kenya’s Wildlife Service is planning to relocate wildlife in the Galana-Kulalu area, which borders Tsavo National Park.
Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has invested Sh70 million in community projects in the Sondu area of Kisumu County, Kenya. The investment aims to improve the wellbeing of the community, which is home to the Sondu-Miriu hydropower project. The company has sponsored secondary school students with Sh850,000 over the last two years, and has ensured consistent access to safe water through the installation of water points, boreholes, and water pumps. The company is currently restoring collapsed water projects and considering replacing old pumps with modern electrical pumps. Over Sh5 million has been spent on water projects, while Sh5.3 million has been spent on tree planting to enhance ecological balance. The company is in talks with other agencies to find ways to connect affected homes. The committee is impressed by the progress made since the resolutions were passed in June last year.
German recruiting consultant firm BBW Group is set to interview Kenyans with technical and vocational skills for various German industries as part of a government-partnered labour migration programme. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu held consultations with Volker Falchi, Managing Director for BBW Group, who emphasized Kenya’s well-trained young people with the necessary technical competencies and skills to work anywhere in the world. Falch said potential candidates should have the right work ethic, demonstrate the ability to learn the German language, and have the necessary technical competencies for German industries.
The East Africa Community (EAC) is set to benefit from an ultra-modern maritime training facility at the Fisheries Training Institute (FTI) in Entebbe, Uganda. The facility, under construction at a cost of USD 1.45 million, aims to train and build capacity for vessel operators in both navigable water bodies and the oceans. It includes state-of-the-art facilities, marine training, a swimming pool bridge simulator, equipped laboratories, and a medical first aid facility. The facility will assist in training marine officers, marine engineers, boat and ship operators, coxwain, fishermen, and able sea men from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the DRC to attain qualifications in marine education.
Kisumu County residents have benefited from Sh800 million from the Hustlers Fund kitty as of October 10, 2023. Kisumu Central leads the pack in terms of borrowers and repayment, with a positive repayment rate of 66%. The seven sub-counties are performing well, with Kisumu Central leading the pack in terms of numbers of borrowers and repayment. Nationally, 21.4 million Kenyans have greatly benefited from the Sh38 billion disbursed from the kitty as of October 16th. Over 500 leaders of registered women groups were called to form cooperatives to access government funding for starting up businesses. The financing kitties earmarked for groups of youth, women, and persons with disabilities include the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, the Youth Enterprise Development Fund, the Women Enterprise Fund, the Uwezo Fund, and the Hustlers Fund.
