President William Ruto yesterday held a consultative meeting with leaders from Homa Bay County which focused on the transformative development agenda in the region. The discussions centered on the progress of government policies, flagship programs and ongoing projects, assessing their impact on economic growth, infrastructure and service delivery. The forum reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fast-tracking development in the county, ensuring that every initiative aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) to uplift livelihoods and unlock new opportunities for the people.
A delegation from Informa Markets, led by Portfolio Director Tom Colman, met with Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, to discuss plans for the proposed World Health Expo in Nairobi. Dr. Barasa reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and highlighted the country’s progress in strengthening healthcare systems. She emphasized the Expo’s potential to showcase Kenya’s healthcare innovations, attract investment, and position the country as a regional leader in medical excellence and health tourism. The Ministry of Health pledged support for the initiative, committing to technical input, stakeholder engagement, and promotional collaboration. Dr. Barasa also underscored the importance of aligning the Expo’s themes with Kenya’s health priorities and ensuring long-term benefits beyond the event. The meeting set the stage for further engagement, with both parties keen on leveraging the Expo to advance healthcare transformation in Kenya and across the region.
Kenya is hosting the Regional Health Promotion Conference (RHPC 2025) under the theme “Empowering Communities for Inclusive Universal Health Coverage through an Intersectional Approach.” The conference brings together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to advance health promotion as a key driver of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). While officially opening the conference, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, emphasized the critical role of health promotion in preventing diseases, reducing healthcare costs, and ensuring healthier communities. She highlighted the government’s deliberate shift from a curative to a preventive healthcare model, citing the deployment of 107,831 Community Health Promoters across all 47 counties and the establishment of Primary Care Networks to enhance healthcare access at the grassroots. She further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing partnerships in health promotion, urging stakeholders to leverage technology and innovation to drive sustainable health interventions.
The Principal Secretary State Department for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir chaired the K-WASH program in Nairobi as the team presented its 3rd implementation report. The team comprising of Ministry’s PMU together with World Bank officials led by Ms Pascaline and Treasury were in attendance both physically and electronically via Zoom engagement. The team highlighted both the achievements so far attained as well the challenges witnessed. Key among the issues encountering challenges was the school WASH facilities and WASH investments in refugee camps, as no institution has budgeted for the K-WASH facilities as at present. PS Korir promised to fast track the progress by end of next month before disbursements and subsequent approval by Parliament to enable the successful implementation of the project. Other pending issues on collaborative agreements and intergovernmental participation will hitherto be discussed and resolved with key actions where PMU will document K-WASH expenditure/ contribution to date as well as submit Annual work plan for FY 2025-2026.
Othaya town based Mwai Kibaki Level IV Hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team has recorded a milestone through a successful first ever laser procedure, a groundbreaking step in airway management. The patient, who had subglottic and tracheal stenosis post intubation, benefited from this minimally invasive procedure, avoiding open surgery while improving their breathing and overall quality of life. The ENT team that carried out the procedure was led by Dr. Muturi and Dr. Mwai from the facility and was backed up by Dr. Maina from Kenyatta National Hospital.
