The chairperson of Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Willy Kuria wants funds given to schools as capitation to be reviewed upwards. He argued that the value of the money they receive for each student annually has gone down as compared to increasing prices of school items. He stated that the capitation of KSh22,000 per student per annum was set back in 2017, observing prices of commodities has escalated and many schools have been left grappling with debts.
In readiness for the peak tourist season, eight European Union consuls assessed the preparedness and capacity of hospitals in Mombasa to handle medical emergencies. The department of health services in Nyamira County is conducting a 10-day retooling training to its Community Health Promoters (CHPs) to enhance their basic health service delivery within their communities. The County director for primary health services, John Kimani while officially opening the training pointed out that CHPs are the first and critical health service providers in the health care service chain and should therefore be adequately informed because they play a crucial role in saving lives. He clarified that the initial strategy when community health service was introduced was in the spirit of volunteering. Community health service providers were not paid but motivated by being issued with free training on how to undertake their work, issued with bicycles to assist in mobility in the vast communities covered by few volunteers then.
A family in Njigari area, Othaya, is all smiles after the area MP Wambugu Wainaina through his foundation erected a new house, barely two days after their home was reduced to ashes in a fire incident. The foundation team yesterday gave out relief supplies that included bedding, furniture, and food to the family of Mama Gatundu. Through the Wambugu Wainaina Foundation, the MP has built more than 200 semi permanent houses for the underprivileged across the constituency.
Kenya has reached a major milestone in its fight against HIV, with over 1.36 million people living with HIV receiving treatment by the end of last year, surpassing the UNAIDS 98-98-94 targets. This achievement was highlighted by Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Mr. Harry Kimtai, at the DEAM Conference on “Defeating HIV in Africa – An Achievable Goal” in Rome, Italy. In his address on Friday last week, Kimtai pointed to significant progress, including a 78% reduction in new HIV infections, a 68% decrease in HIV-related deaths, and a 65% drop in mother-to-child transmission. He praised the country’s successful integration of Dolutegravir (DTG) into treatment regimens, which has greatly improved treatment outcomes and accelerated viral suppression.
Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Horticulture Research Institute(HRI) on Friday hosted the Chairperson of the KALRO Board, Dr. Thuo Mathenge where he was taken through the institute activities by the Director, Dr. Kori Njunguna and his Deputy, Dr. Daniel Gikaara.
During his visit, Dr. Mathenge explored and appreciated some of the remarkable ongoing projects at KALRO HRI, reaffirming the shared commitment to advancing horticultural research and innovation.
Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) Management Services chairman Solomon Maina alias Solo on Saturday joined residents of Kiarithaini village as they erected the foundation for the New Kiarithaini Tea Collection Center in Mathira constituency. Solo commended the locals for their unity and passion in seeing the completing the project. He noted that once completed, the Center will reduce the distance they travel to deliver their produce.
