The State Department of Livestock will partner with Nyandarua County Government to address milk processing and value addition, animal feeds production, diseases control and leather value addition.
This was discussed and agreed upon yesterday during a meeting held at Kilimo House between area Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha and the Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai.
During the meeting, delivery of the remaining milk coolers that were promised to Nyandarua’s Cooperative societies was discussed with the PS assuring that the programme has been revived and “we shall have the coolers in the next few months because it’s part of our National Government commitments.”
Thanking the Principal Secretary, Governor Badilisha said that his administration seeks “sustainable partnerships with all stakeholders where we deliver on the promises we made – like the production of cheap and affordable farm feeds, upgrading of our breeds through A.I. and extension services, and value addition for our dairy products and by-products.”
The meeting resolved to escalate the discussion, and came up with four critical deliverables whose outcomes are expected to greatly transform the dairy and livestock sector in the County.
Earlier, the Governor – together with other 47 county heads – held a roundtable discussion with the Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, under the auspices of the Council of Governors, where issues of primary healthcare, sustainable agriculture and value addition were discussed.
During the meeting, the County bosses asked development partners to closely work and partner with County Governments “and invest where comparatively there is guarantee for sustainable and verifiable impact, and with actors who are accountable to the people.” He noted more would be gained by engaging Counties directly and developing common goals and impact indicators.
