Nyeri leaders call for establishment of a Cancer Centre

  • Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga who also attended the burial said he will ensure that the facility is established during this term of President Ruto. He said this will ensure those diagnosed early enough are free of Cancer.

Nyeri leaders have called upon the National Government to establish a Cancer Centre in the county saying it will save a lot of lives.

The leaders promised to push President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua to ensure that the facility which was promised by the Hungary Government through the former regime is established.

The facility promised by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta over five years ago was to be built at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

Speaking during the burial ceremony of Elizabeth Waigumo Gichohi, 61 who died due to Pancreatic Cancer, the leaders said the National Government must also release enough funds to equip the medical facilities in the county in order to fight the disease.

The late Waigumo was the wife to Mukurwe-ini West MCA Atanasio Wakabaire. The final send -off ceremony was held at Tambaya grounds in Mukurwe-ini.

Statistics show that Nyeri is the leading county in terms of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like Diabetes, Cancer and Hypertension.

Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga said that he will push for the facility until it is operational.

Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia noted that Cancer is now pandemic and so the county needs to establish a Cancer Hospital in Nyeri County to help in early diagnosis.

Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto said health matters should be taken very seriously and the Cancer disease must be declared a national disaster.

Othaya MP  Wambugu Wainaina who also supported his colleagues sentiments added that Nyeri leaders must remain united and rally behind the DP Rigathi Gachagua saying this will help to continue working as one team adding that this will quicken development, including the establishment of a Cancer Centre in the county.

His sentiments were backed by Nyeri Speaker Gichuhi Mwangi who called upon leaders to support Rigathi Gachagua and his work adding that there is also need to support the young leaders in the region.

“We shall continue pushing for One man one shilling formula. We shall not allow again that when our students are suffering due to lack of school fees, others areas have more than enough bursary funds,” added Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi.

While supporting the early screening process, the leaders as well as other speakers who included the deceased’s family and relatives revealed that she died,  just days after she was diagnosed with the killer disease.

Scores of other leaders, including MCAs attended the final send off ceremony.
