A 20-member pool table team from Nyeri County is set to compete in the National Pool Table Games Tournament in Nakuru, which kicks off today, running up to Sunday.
The team, comprising 18 men and two women, is confident of bringing home the championship trophy.
Speaking ahead of their departure last evening, team leader Martin Wachira expressed optimism about their chances in the competition.
“We have trained hard, and we are ready to compete at the highest level. Our goal is to win and make Nyeri proud,” he said.
One of the participants, Paul Ndung’u alias Miti-ini, echoed his sentiments, stating that they were well-prepared and determined to emerge victorious.
The tournament will feature both singles and group categories, providing the Nyeri players with multiple opportunities to showcase their skills.
The team’s journey to the national level has been supported by various local leaders and corporate sponsors.
Wachira Kandara, the representative of Nyeri Town Constituency MP, Duncan Maina Mathenge, said the lawmaker had sponsored the players.
“We are proud to support this talented group, and we will continue to invest in talent development in our area whenever possible,” he said.
“We wish them all the best and hope they return with the overall trophy.”
Ms Mary Muthoni who represented Famyard Enterprises, real estate firm also echoed similar sentiments saying the firm had generously supported the team.
Other sponsors included Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga who paid the team’s registration fees for the tournament.
Their assistance has helped the players transition from local tournaments to the national stage.
The competition promises lucrative rewards for the top five winners. The first-place finisher will receive Ksh 100,000, while the second, third, fourth, and fifth positions will earn Ksh 70,000, Ksh 40,000, Ksh 20,000, and Ksh 5,000, respectively.
The Nyeri team is drawn from different parts of the county, reflecting the region’s growing passion for the sport.
As they headed to Nakuru, they carried the hopes of their supporters, eager to prove their skills and make history in the tournament.
