Hundreds of Othaya constituency residents joined hands in their headquarters cleaning and tree planting exercise, ahead of short-rains.
The Saturday exercise saw the entire town streets, market and adjacent roads tidied, courtesy of a local philanthropist Mr Antony Gitonga.

Gitonga, the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Antony Gitonga Foundation had mobilised hundreds of local residents from all corners of the constituency, dozens of Scouts and Girl Guide members, students from at least 26 primary, secondary and tertiary institutions as well as officials from national and county governments to make the exercise successful.
Further, Gitonga had dragged with him artists led by Stevo Simple Boy and Karwìmbo Mùkùrino as well as Kenya’s to magician, Chille De’Magician who entertained the residents atop an open lorry as they carried the cleaning, sweeping, drainage unblocking and tree planting exercise.

Gitonga who is also an International Commissioner of the Kenya Scouts Association said the activities theme of ‘A Cleaner And Greener Othaya’ was in line with addressing the call for serious asdress to climate change and best hygienic practices which a key to a prosperous society.
Saying that at least 1,000 trees were planted around the town, Gitonga noted, “tree planting is fundamental and is very important maintain a stable ecosystem, rainfall and good environment for air purification.”
Apart from tree planting and cleaning, Gitonga and his team held consultative sessions with local residents where they were sensitised on the need to plant trees and practice public hygiene.
He said his foundation is also involved in various other activities such as sports and economic empowerment initiatives.
Locals hailed Antony Gitonga Foundation boss for organising the activity, saying it was beneficial, not only to them, but all future generations.
“We thank this Foundation founder for remembering to come and assist us. We are calling him Othaya 1 for keeping us, as his first priority,” said Mama Mary Wambui, a vendor in Othaya town.
