Othaya constituency Member of Parliament Wambugu Wainaina yesterday distributed relief supplies to thousands of locals who have been hit by prolonged drought.
The lawmaker alongside the area Deputy County Commissioner flagged off the food at the National Government Administration Offices near Othaya town.
The supplies are meant for over 3,000 area residents who have been hit most by lack of enough rains.
He distributed 27,000 Kilograms of rice and beans which were given out by the the National Government to 2,500 vulnerable families in the constituency.
Addressing those present, Wainaina noted that the number of those in need of relief supplies had gone up to about 3,000 families of which 500 families are getting help from his personal program where he has been using his own resources to procure food for them.
To address the perennial lack of food in some parts of the constituency, the MP said he was working on an initiative that will ensure that local people will get irrigation water to curb hunger once and for all.
Last month, the MP and his Mukurwe-ini counterpart visited Aberdare Ranges on a fact finding mission for a proposed dam that is aimed at hosting water for irrigation in the area.
The proposed mega dam is expected to feed residents of Othaya, Mukurwe-ini and Tetu constituencies with irrigation water.
