Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

The impeachment process against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially began yesterday after Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse tabled a motion in Parliament, accusing Gachagua of over 11 violations. These violations include breaches of the constitution, corruption, and incitement, signalling a significant political showdown within the country’s leadership.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, presiding over the National Assembly session, approved the motion, stating that the 11 grounds outlined by Mutuse met the constitutional threshold for impeachment proceedings. In his motion, Mutuse revealed that 291 Members of Parliament (MPs) had signed the petition to remove Gachagua from office, highlighting widespread support for the process.
Mutuse emphasized that Gachagua’s actions had undermined the office of the Deputy President, further accusing him of misconduct that has brought disrepute to the country. As the impeachment process gains momentum, the motion will now proceed to further stages in Parliament, where MPs will debate and vote on Gachagua’s fate.
During the session, MPs also called on Speaker Wetang’ula to direct Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to provide adequate security the president and those who appended their signatures to the motion.They emphasized the need for heightened security, especially for those openly backing the move to impeach the Deputy President.
The tabling of this motion marks the beginning of what is expected to be a highly charged and divisive political process, with the outcome potentially reshaping Kenya’s political landscape.
