In a significant move to enhance regional security, the governments of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have convened through the Regional Working Group to address transnational threats affecting Lake Victoria.
The Fourth Regional Working Group meeting, held in Mombasa, focused on strengthening border security and improving coordination among the three nations.
Principal Secretary for the State Department for Interior, Raymond Omollo, highlighted the importance of protecting Lake Victoria, which is crucial for the socio-economic lives of the communities that depend on it.
He emphasized that the meeting, supported by the International Organisation of Migration (IOM), aims to tackle organised crime in the region.
“We will work on better coordination, capacity building, and creating a shared understanding within communities,” said Omollo. He stressed the need for ongoing collaboration among law enforcement agencies to effectively address the challenges that have arisen since the program’s inception.
Directorate of Immigration Services and Head of Kenyan Delegation, Evelyn Cheluget, noted the progress made since the program began in November 2022.
The meeting facilitated enhanced information sharing, joint patrols, and effective strategies to combat transnational crime.
As the nations reaffirm their commitment to regional cooperation, they look forward to documenting actionable outcomes from this meeting and exploring ways to leverage Lake Victoria for economic growth while minimising criminal activity.
