The Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC), led by its Chairperson, Attorney General Hon. Dorcas Oduor, hosted a significant visit to the Naivasha Maximum Prison as part of its ongoing three-day tour of correctional facilities across the country.
The visit focused on reviewing inmate petitions for possible presidential pardons by H.E. President Dr. William Ruto. The delegation was warmly received by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Patrick Aranduh, CBS, alongside other senior prison officials.
Hon. Oduor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing justice reforms through POMAC’s mandate of advising the President on mercy petitions. She revealed that plans are underway to establish 47 legal aid offices across the country, each to be staffed with a POMAC officer to ensure accessible justice for all.
POMAC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Lydia Muriuki emphasized the committee’s dedication to integrating technology and innovation within Kenya’s justice system. She highlighted that Artificial Intelligence will play a key role in streamlining data management, improving case tracking, and enhancing decision-making processes for petitions and rehabilitative programs.
During the visit, the POMAC delegation also toured the Prisons Showroom, which showcased creative and skill-based products made by inmates as part of the correctional and rehabilitation process. Later, Hon. Oduor chaired a consultative session with POMAC members to deliberate on key findings and recommendations from the facility.
Commissioner General Aranduh appreciated the committee’s visit and commended the ongoing collaboration between the Kenya Prisons Service and POMAC. He noted that reforms under Cap 90 continue to transform correctional institutions, making them more rehabilitative and less punitive.
The Naivasha visit marks a milestone for Hon. Oduor as her first official tour of a correctional facility in her capacity as Attorney General and Chairperson of POMAC, reflecting a renewed focus on restorative justice and national reintegration efforts.
