First Lady Rachel Ruto yesterday joined hundreds of Kenyans in marking this year’s International Widows Day.
The event that took place at Bugo Primary School grounds in Nyamaiya ward of Nyamira county was also attended by top women leadership, led by the President’s Advisor on Women Rights Ms Harriette Chiggai.
The day was marked to honour the strength, resilience and dignity of widows across the country.
It is usually commemorated as a reminder of leaders’ collective responsibility to promote inclusion, economic empowerment, and the protection of widows in all communities.
While reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that no widow is left behind, Ms Ruto and Ms Chiggai urged women to take advantage of various funding initiatives, fronted by the government to raise money for their economic empowerment.
The First Lady informed widows that there are funds targeting women from Ward to the National level and urged them to join groups that will enable them to access such funds.
Ms Chiggai thanked the Kenya Kwanza administration for initiating programmes that not only support women but also others in the country.
