The movement of women is writing to the ministry of energy and mineral development (MEMD) to use its oversight power to reduce fuel prices which has affected our day to day standards of living. This call has come after the citizens of Uganda especially the motorist and cyclist complained of the hiked prices of fuel which has caused crisis in Uganda. The fuel crisis started in November last year and it has come to its peak on 18th January 25, 2022 when the economy is fully open after the two years of lockdown due to covid 19 pandemic.
It’s important to note that Fuel is a key economy driver. Most services and goods depend on fuel. A company like Mukwano Group has more than 150 trucks which ply long routes across the country. This means that a small shift in a fuel price especially upwards, will increase the cost of goods produced and the consumers will be the ones to suffer . The dilemma now is not only the hiking of fuel prices but also the unavailability of fuel, this has limited the transportation of commodities to retail shops leading to increased demand of goods hence sellers will increase the prices of the goods to cater for the fuel charges thus affecting the consumers
Honorable Minister, Some hospitals, schools, industries, salons, and other commercial entities especially in the north use generators as the fallback position in cases of interrupted main grid power supply. Northern region especially West Nile has always had unreliable power in terms of supply stability. With no fuel, this region must be stuck completely. This directly means that not only the cost of living is now up but also the social services provision is very impaired
Madam minister, Uganda has a free economy where prices are determined by demand and supply forces so since there is high demand of fuel its very obvious that the fuel prices will go high until the ministry of Energy intervene by having all fuel depots full to capacity to stabilize both fuel prices and availability. More so, some patients in areas like Kabongo, Kwen, Amudat and Isingiro are dying not because of lack of medicine, or treatment but because theatre can’t work because of no fuel for generators. It’s a hard thing to justify, its piercing and painful. If you want to know the impact of this fuel shortage in upcountry and the world at large.
Honorable minister we are in two weeks of fuel crises, for the measures put in place we thought that by now it would be better and favourable for all the cyclists and motorists but no more.
Our concerns: Honourable minister we call upon petrol, shell, total energies and other fuel stations from different countries reduce the price of fuel so that the bodaboda cyclists, tax drivers, motorists can be able to buy fuel at cheaper price.
We also call upon the ministry of energy and mineral development together with government of Uganda, to put fuel reserves to help and supply when there is scarcity.
We also call upon the ministry of health to remove the fee that trucker drivers pay at the boarder for covid 19 testing and to make sure that they test once since all the tests are always the same.
Honorable minister, we therefore call for immediate release to save the country from fuel scarcity and to put in place fuel reserves to help in this challenging situation.
