Kenya’s young entrepreneurs are turning TikTok, Instagram and YouTube into engines of economic opportunity β but digital literacy remains the missing link.

Social media has fundamentally shifted from entertainment to economic infrastructure for young Kenyans. Platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are today powering businesses, careers and education for a generation that refuses to wait for traditional opportunity.
Across Kenya, young people are using digital platforms to promote businesses, showcase talents and reach audiences far beyond their local communities. For aspiring entrepreneurs, social media offers a low-cost alternative to expensive traditional advertising β a leveller in a market where capital remains scarce.
The case of Mwangi Muthoni, proprietor of Dreadlocks Nairobi Kenya, illustrates the point sharply. According to a Business Daily Africa report published in June 2024, Muthoni began posting dreadlocks and hair care content on TikTok in 2021 and built a following of more than 50,000, with customers finding him directly through the platform. His experience is not universal β success depends on the product, the audience and consistent engagement β but it signals what is possible.
Social media has also created openings for content creators, photographers, journalists and digital marketers to build professional identities. Yet the same platforms carry real risks: misinformation, cyberbullying and online harassment demand responsible use, not passive scrolling.
Young people must learn to create meaningful content, verify information before sharing it and guard their digital identities. Educational institutions and policymakers must match that effort with serious investment in digital literacy.
Kenya’s digital moment is here. The question is whether its youth will consume it or build with it.
