- However, immediately the move was made public, the party Deputy Secretary General Wambugu Nyamu, party Director of Election D K Munene and King’ori Chotto denounced the move terming it as betrayal.
- During a Media briefing on Sunday, the trio said they had written to the Registrar of Political Parties Ms Anne Nderitu petitioning her to disregard the agreement.
- They said, the move by Muturi didn’t have the party National Executive Council (NEC) or National Delegates Conference (NDC) blessings since none of the two bodies had ratified it.
A move by Speaker of the National Assembly and Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) Presidential aspirant Justin Muturi to join Kenya Kwanza coalition has divided the party down the middle.
The party, founded by retired President Mwai Kibaki in 1991 is now facing its toughest time as its national officials pull from different directions on the latest political move by Muturi.
The Speaker joined the party just a few months ago and after a few weeks he was made its Party Leader. This is after former Cabinet Minister and Mbooni Member of Parliament relinquished that position and was made its Patron.
In February, Muturi was endorsed as the party president aspirant during a National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at the Bomas of Kenya.
What was ratified during the NDC is now emerging as the elephant in the room which has divided its top officials.
While joining the Kenya Kwanza team which is headed by Deputy President Dr William Ruto, Muturi said he had acted as per the resolutions endorsed by NDC members.
He said the party resolved to explore ways of working with other like minded political organisations and that after numerous consultations, they party had decided to join the Deputy President’s team.
The Saturday announcement which saw Muturi and Ruto sign documents shocked both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Kenya coalitions as all along the Speaker had indicated that he would go it alone.
Equally puzzled were some of the Democratic Party officials who were kept in the dark with some knowing of the move through the media.
Kenya Kwanza supporters welcomed the move saying it was a clear indication that the Ruto team was destined to win during the forthcoming General Election.
On the other hand, Azimio supporters, expressed shock over the move but dismissed it as inconsequential.

They said, the move by Muturi didn’t have the party National Executive Council (NEC) or National Delegates Conference (NDC) blessings since none of the two bodies had ratified it.
Further, they observed, the last NDC didn’t mandate Muturi or any other official to plan and join any political arrangement before the General Election.
The said they would also seek redress through the courts of law.
Yesterday, Nyamu who is seeking the Nyeri County senatorial seat under DP used his Facebook page to write an open letter to Muturi.
An extract of the letter is here below.
“I proudly blog. But you are a selfish betrayer.
You promised a whole team that you were man enough to face the big boys.
You swore before a whole NEC and NDC that you will sprint to the finish line and whether you win or not, and if you loose, you would fight another day.
A whole region had started viewing you as a possible successor to our Muthamaki. To lead and defend them. You requested me to popularise you in Nyeri, I did it with gusto against a UDA wave, making you big meetings and road rallies you had not done before.
Yes I blog and I proudly do so to fight for farmer’s better prices, affordable health care and better life for the downtrodden. Being unelected, that’s the only forum I have . I blogged on your being a DP Presidential Aspirant.
You also blog. Blogging is a communication mode, a lifestyle and a money making channel to many young people. DON’T despise it.
But lo! Prof Karuti Kanyinga, your village mate was right.
A tortoise can only be lifted to the table.
You told me they have promised you Deputy Presidental position, from my heart, I sincerely wish you luck.
Don’t defranchise the Aspirants you promised support, me excluded.
