Tana Water Works Development Agency Set To Handover Sh1.1B To Kirinyaga County Residents

- During a site visit and inspection by the new TWWDA board chairman Wanyaga Gathaka and technical staff, the contractor was hard pressed to give an assurance that he would not seek a further extension if granted his wish of a five month extension to the end of May. The due completion date was end of last December but the contractor sought extension.
- According to Engineer Erastus Waweru of TWWDA, land acquisition has hampered the speedy completion of most projects as no real work can commence without sorting out the transfer of the same yet it is a tedious exercise.
Over 300,000 residents of Kirinyaga County are set to have clean and sufficient water for domestic use in the next three months.
The residents of Kerugoya/Kutus constituency will benefit after a Sh1.1 billion water and sewerage infrastructure works are completed.
This project, being undertaken by Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) under the sponsorship of Africa Development Bank and the government of Kenya involves construction of a 30 million litre intake at Kiringa in Mt Kenya Forest.
The project awarded to Nanchang Foreign Engineering Company in 2018 has had several challenges including acquisition of land for the construction of Water Treatment Works at Muratiri area.

In answer to acquisition from the chairman, Eng. Waweru said that the water body has resolved to always deal with land issues before the commencement of any project in future to ensure that completion is always as scheduled.
The Muratiri Treatment Works within Nyayo Tea Zone has been in construction for the last three years after having stalled for a year due to a land tussle with the tea zone agency that owns the land.
During the construction of water tanks at Gakoigo area, the water agency constructed several classrooms in Gakoigo Primary School in compensation of the land that was used to set up the 3 million litre tank.
The chairman’s entourage later visited the Sewerage treatment plant at the Ahiti Ndomba in Mwea.
The contractor, Zhonghao Overseas Construction Engineering Co. Ltd. gave an assurance that the project will be completed before the end of June noting that the only hindrance is acquisition of 1.2 kilometre wayleave which they intend to get resolved in the shortest time possible.
