In as much as teachers in Secondary schools tell students to work hard and secure chances in Higher institutions of learning, they fail to describe the challenges they will face while pursuing their dream courses. Most students who got a chance to join the university believe in their fresh minds that life is a piece of cake-easy life.
One year after joining is when hell breaks loose. Our innocent students are hit by reality, that’s when they realize the road to success is kind of rough. Having two meals a day becomes a dream they can’t reach due to financial problems, challenging cats and exams plus toxic relationship is another pain in the neck. Imposing all these circumstances on a solitary mind is terrific, they feel like they are residing in a horror movie. That is why most students end up dropping out of school, while some resolve to drugs and end up committing suicide.
All of the above issues cause one disease-Depression. Depression has been consuming our students without us noticing because the students fear stigmatization. It is high time parents had a talk with their sons and daughters in these institutions and make sure everything is fine. High school teachers should also tell students the truth in black and white about life in the university so that they join while mentally prepared.
Institutions of learning should also encourage guidance and counselling campaigns for students. Mind disease kills faster.
