A PWD beneficiary receives tools of trade from NFDK

Thika West Deputy County Commissioner Mbogo Mathioya has ordered for a major swoop in Thika town and its environs to nab criminals who have been soliciting money from members of the public in the streets of Thika town in the pretence that they are living with disabilities.
The administrator said the town has in recent times witnessed an influx of a high number of fake beggars who were minting money from unsuspecting members of the public by asking for assistance in pretext that they were people living with disability.
Mathioya was speaking outside his compound where he joined officials from the National Persons with Disabilities Kenya(NPDK) in Thika town yesterday. The DCC warned that his office would not hesitate to crack down on such characters, adding that they would be swept out of the streets.

NFDK chairperson Prof Julia Ojiambo urged the beneficiaries to use the tools for the intended purpose to better their lives.
She said their office has received reports that some of them sell the items at a throwaway price to get quick cash instead of using them to change their lives.
Among the items donated included farming tools, digital cameras, salon and beauty tools, carpentry, welding machines, tailoring sewing machines, wheelchairs and walking sticks and crutches.
She said the government was committed to ensuring that PWDs live better lives through funding of their business initiatives and the provision of mobility assistance devices.
Ojiambo urged PWDs to apply for a disability membership card, advising them to get the application forms at social protection offices.
She implored the importance for disabled persons to possess disability identification cards saying one enjoys a variety of privileges, opportunities and services provided by the government and during social gatherings.
She at the same time expressed satisfaction that people living with disability have competed with the other Kenyans and filled elective offices than before when they relied on nominations. “We are happy to note that PWDs have come out to seek elective seats both at the County and National level instead of waiting to be nominated for such slots in the past. This is very commendable,” the Chairperson said.
