Vomiting in dogs

Worth Noting:
- Brown vomit may be regurgitated food that never made it to the stomach to be digested. It can also indicate that the dog ate too fast and didn’t munch the food or swallow a lot of air by gulping it down. It is wise to inspect the brown vomit as it may send signals that tend not to be ignored. Blood traces can sometimes appear brown if they are not profusely blood. Brown vomit may also be an indicator of the dog eating fecal matter.
- Green vomit can be a result of eating grass. It can also result from the gall bladder’s contraction before vomiting. Occasionally most cases occur on an empty stomach, leading to bile secretion in the stomach.
Vomiting in dogs
It mainly occurs when the contents of the stomach and upper gut are ejected by force. Dog vomit can contain bile, yellow in color, or food that has been partially digested and usually smells sour. Vomiting may occur directly after eating or any time after that. It generally leads to nausea signs, such as licking the lips, drooling of saliva, and excessive habit of swallowing.
Some dogs may feed on green grass prior to or after the vomiting. This may possibly induce vomiting or protect the esophagus because grass can cover sharp objects like bone when the dog is vomiting. It is a wise idea to prevent them from eating a large amount of grass, or it may worsen the matter.
They might also eat their vomit, an instinct that dogs have that is a very eyesore to us humans, but it is not a big deal to them.
Vomiting leads to dehydration and may make the dogs gulp water in large volumes, and this also may cause vomiting. Hence limiting water intake to small amounts at a time is recommended.
Regurgitation in dogs
It is a mild ejection of undigested food from the dog’s esophagus. The food never made it to the stomach. The main difference is that regurgitation does not involve abdominal heaving. It happens shortly after feeding; maybe the dog ate too fast or too much and is over-excited or stressed out.
Vomit color can help you determine what your dog is suffering from. One must be very keen to decide whether or not it is vomiting or regurgitating. Every owner should be on the watch for the following color in the exudates:
- Yellow vomit is very commonly seen when a dog is on an empty stomach. The yellow color is due to bile secretions. It is seen most commonly in the middle of the night and early morning hours. It can be a result of acid buildup, reflux, or any other systematic condition that causes nausea on an empty stomach.
- White, foamy vomit can be a result of stomach acid buildup. The foamy appearance may be a result of the vomit coming into contact with the air or being passed around in the stomach before the vomiting occurs,
- Clear, liquid vomit usually occurs when a dog drinks water while feeling nauseous and cannot keep the water down the stomach. Either be caused by stomach secretions or when water pooling in the stomach comes up by itself when vomited.
- Mucous-like, slimy vomit. It occurs when a dog is drooling and pools in the stomach in response to some significant irritation. The dog relieves nausea when they vomit up the mucus.
- Bloody vomit (pink or red) should be considered a severe case. Blood causes nausea, so it is often thrown up if it pools in the upper gastrointestinal tract. If the color is not progressive to red and the vomiting is limited, a pink tinge is not always a sign of an alarming situation. If there are blood clots or stains, fresh blood, or a coffee ground appearance to the vomit, the things could indicate bleeding into the stomach or upper small intestines. Bleeding can result from an ulcer, tumor, lack of clotting, or eating rat poison such as zinc sulphide. All these alerts need medical attention from the veterinarian.

- Worms in vomit. Worms like roundworms and other infectious organisms like parvovirus can lead to vomiting in dogs. A dog may vomit up if there are live worms of large infestations. In this case, eggs may be shed in the fecal matter and can be the only way to diagnose them.
- Grass in vomit is a common element in dog vomit. They feed on grass when their stomach has upset, which can, in time, induce vomiting.
The predisposing factors are age, breed, and behavior. There can also be internal or external causes. Vomiting can be one-time, sudden instance, or often happens over time. These can range from: bloat, abrupt diet change, brain tumor, cancer, constipation, diabetes mellitus, drinking contaminated water, eating grass, food allergies, exercising after feeding, and eating too fast. Others like intestinal parasites, gastrointestinal ulcers, gastritis, middle ear disease, intestinal obstruction from foreign bodies, parvovirus, motion sickness from transportation in the car, and reaction to the medicine, among other factors.
These are just guidelines for looking at when you notice your dog is vomiting. Calling a vet to check on your dog is the best way to avoid risking the dog’s life. Keep your pet in a clean, warm environment, and provide clean drinking water and safe food to prevent vomiting and other life-threatening conditions. Dog safety lies entirely in the choices and the living conditions supplied. For free-roaming dogs that scavenge everywhere, you might find it impossible to control what they feed, and the cases of vomiting may be unlimited.
