Kisii Governor Simba Arati has ordered the sacking of two senior Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue staff for what he termed as gross conduct, incompetence and sabotage.
This was allegations of staff negligence and sabotage at the facility where unscrupulous staff has been tampering with the systems; an upsurge of unclaimed and incident bodies has taken a toll on the mortuary’s output.
The action comes two days after several bereaved families visiting to pick bodies of their loved ones protested the bad state of the bodies.

Arati said he believes foul play and sabotage were the motivating force from the rogue morgue staff to play dirty games aimed at discrediting his administration.
He spoke of receiving further intelligence of more other saboteur activities that were in the offing from rogue medical staff at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
“I have heard some people wanted switch the oxygen plant at night and kill over 50 babies in the nursery,” Arati told journalists.
The sacked staff was ordered to publicly match out of the facility.
“We wish to extend our regrets to the affected families who had the remains of their loved ones mishandled, while under preservation in the mortuary,” he said.
Arati accused the duo of deliberately switching off the coolers in an indecent scheme to paint his government.
“The worst part of it is bodies brought by the police and are dumped by the same staff with abandon with no embalming done. This is the height of dirty schemes by a people not ready to work,” the governor said.
The old mortuary would now be reopened to preserve unclaimed bodies and those police were bringing in.
The governor promised to allocate sh 2 m for its refurbishment before use.
Arati also announced plans to have the chapel converted to a holding for more other bodies to address congestion at the main morgue.
He expressed shock that the sacked staff were piling up bodies against the recommended 78.
Governor said his administration has kicked-off deliberate efforts to restore best practices at our mortuary at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, following a public outcry on the ongoings at the facility.
While taking disciplinary action against errant mortuary attendants and other officers, his administration is also seeking to expand the mortuary capacity to avoid future incidents of bodies being mishandled.
