Two female members of the National Assembly have called on researchers and other stakeholders in the International Conference on Gender and Technology, 2025 to put more emphasis on delving in integration of social media and psychological torture.
While reacting to a Paper on exploring Social Media’s influence on body image distortion in the digital era, Narok County MP Rebecca Tonkei challenged scholars to address the existing research gaps and focus on strategies to promote positive digital habits.
On her part, Pauline Lenguris from Samburu urged the policymakers present during the conference to spearhead interventions that empower women using social media channels.
“Kenya is part of this study as women are already participating in the digital economy. The country has supported them through initiatives like free Wi-Fi in some market centres,” said Lenguris.
The MPs also took part in panel sessions and engaged key note speakers on various topics as well as scholarly researchers.
However, Kenya was amongst the 16 countries that were admitted to participate in the International conference at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, India.
The contributions by the two female MPs are expected to enrich research, empower women and shape the world’s economies.
Dr. Bhavani Rao, Dean of the School of Behavioral Sciences, Amrita University acknowledged the contributions by all invited guests and highlighted the importance of practical solutions such as attitude change by women in professions like Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), implementation of gender responsive policies and celebrating women’s achievements
