The Department of Health Services in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries – Nyeri County, and the Department of Water and environment have partnered with USAID-MTaPS and USAID-IDDS to plan the commemoration of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2022.
The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that is celebrated annually to improve awareness and understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among members of the public, One-Health stakeholders, and policymakers, who all play a critical role in reducing the further emergence and spread of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
The representatives from the Departments held a meeting over the weekend where they discussed updates on the progress of the Nyeri CASIC activities, discussed the activities to be carried out during WAAW 2022, reviewed the membership CASIC and its TWGs, and planned for the end term review of the Nyeri CASIC work plan.
The Director Environment Yvonne Mathenge presented on AMR containment activities of the Environment sector which included fencing of disposal sites, improvement of water infrastructure, segregation of waste, tree planting and clean ups in the decommissioned dumpsite among many of their achievements.
Dr. James Gathigo presented on the achievements made by Agriculture sector in line with the commitments made in the CASIC work plan. The Department of Agriculture appreciated the continued support they receive from UN-FAO towards AMR containment activities in the county. They called on the need to improve coordination of activities among the sectors, and across the different levels from the community to the county.
Dr Oscar Agoro, the AMR Focal Point (Health) presented on the progress on awareness and understanding of AMR which has been achieved through effective communication, education, and training. He emphasized the importance of reducing incidence of infections through IPC measures, optimising the use of Antimicrobials in human and animal health, and the need for more focus on surveillance and research to generate local data for better understanding of the AMR situation in the county.
This year, the theme of WAAW is “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together.” The three Sectors agreed to ensure the prudent use of antimicrobials, and to strengthen preventive measures in addressing AMR as they work together collaboratively through a One-Health approach.
Planning for the WAAW 2022 activities will be finalized on Tomorrow, and the commemoration held between 18th and 24th of November 2022.
