Youths And Women In The Gusii Community Are Being Encouraged To Run For All Elective Positions

Youths and women in the Gusii community are being encouraged to run for all elective positions, not just limiting themselves to the seat of Women Representative, in order to secure adequate representation and address their concerns.
Dorice Donya Aburi, the Member of Parliament for Kisii County, emphasized that women and youth make up the majority of voters and can win these seats if they choose to contest.
She highlighted the misconception some women have that they can only vie for the Women Representative seat and stressed that women can also contest for Senate, Member of Parliament, Governor, and Member of the County Assembly positions.
Donya mentioned her collaboration with organizations such as the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) and Mzalendo Trust to encourage women and youth to seek elective office.
She urged young people not to be manipulated by politicians during campaigns but to seek substantive solutions to improve their lives.
The MP emphasized the importance of addressing the gender disparity in political representation,
“We have only one woman, Beatrice, was elected to the Kisii County Assembly from Bombaba, while Nyamira had no female representatives, I call for a reversal of this trend,” she said.
Anthony Samba, the CEO of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association, called on MPs to advocate for the concerns of youth and women in the legislative bodies to alleviate their hardships.
He noted that community dialogues like the one held in Sensi Ward provide a platform for leaders and the public to exchange ideas and develop solutions.
Local Ward Representatives, Onchonga Nyagaka and Dennis Ombachi, encouraged leaders to empower youths and women by providing them with loans and promoting investment to enhance their livelihoods and support political campaigns.
Nyagaka emphasized the financial aspect of politics and urged young people to invest in income-generating projects.
Ombachi emphasized the importance of value addition and marketing to generate funds for political campaigns, noting that youth can excel in marketing agricultural produce from Gusii both locally and globally to improve their livelihoods.
