Chief of staff in Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s administration is among nine other Meru County government officials who have resigned to run for various political seats ahead of August 9 polls.
Mr Gideon Kimathi who has been serving at Kiraitu’s government as the Chief of Staff since 2017 tabled his resignation on Tuesday paving way for his quest for South Imenti Parliamentary seat.
Others who have resigned include, Meru Roads, Transport and Energy County Executive Committee Member CECM) Julius Taitumu M’Anaiba who will be vying for Igembe North Parliamentary seat, Sub-County administrators Anderson Mwiti Kathendu and Joseph Mutharimi who are eyeing Senatorial and Ward representative seats respectively, Aurelio Murangiri a Town Administrator –MCA seat, Ward administrators Murithi Titus Mutiria and Mwenda Joseph Ithili who will be contesting for MCA seat, Ag. Deputy Director EMU Erick Mutwiri Mwirigi and a cultural artist Lameck Kathurima who both are eyeing ward representative position and Meru County Investment and Development Corporation Chairperson Felicity Mbiriri who will be battling for Woman representative position.
Announcing his resignation, Meru Chief of staff declared that he will be contesting for South Imenti Sub-County parliamentary seat through Kiraitu’s Development Empowerment Party (DEP).
Kimathi will be making a second attempt for the parliamentary seat after losing the 2017 election to incumbent Kathuri Murungi.
The outgoing Chief of Staff was appointed Chief of Staff by Governor Kiraitu afterwards.
Kimathi will be tussling for the MP seat with popular Comedian MC Jessy, businessperson Dr Shadrack Mwiti and the incumbent MP Kathuri Murungi.
Announcing his resignation Mr Kimathi said he will relinquish his position in the government with immediate effect after serving in the government since 2017.
Kimathi, is a political scientist and a renowned politician in Meru with over 15 years’ experience in politics.
The outgoing Chief of Staff served as Kanyakine ward Councilor in 2007 and Chairman Meru County Council in 2010.
He was elected as Abogeta East Ward representative in 2013 a position he served until 2017.
