Jubilation rocked Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s camp hours after Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Peter Munya revealed that he will not resign from the Cabinet to join politics in the upcoming elections.
Munya who had earlier declared his ambitions to unseat Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi, startled his supporters and residents after a press conference on Wednesday, where he declared his intention to retain his position in the cabinet to work with President Uhuru Kenyatta till the end of his term.
Reacting to the news Mr Murungi termed Munya’s decision not to challenge him in the gubernatorial race as a divine gift for him from God.
“As the Meru governor who was expecting him as my main competitor I must say congratulations and thank you to you,” Kiraitu said.
According to the Kiraitu, Munya’s decision not to contest for the gubernatorial seat makes it easier for him to retain his seat.
“I had planned a very elaborate campaign and because this was going to be my last campaign I was to throw everything into it to ensure that I win again. So my brother has made my work easier and this is a gift to me from God,” Kiraitu added.
The Meru governor promised to work with CS Munya who has been his political archrival since 2017.
“I want to thank him and promise to work together with him. This gives me an opportunity to work without stress to make Meru great,” the Meru governor added, calling Munya’s supporters to join his camp.
Meru deputy governor Titus Ntuchiu said that they are ready to accommodate Munya allies in their DEP party.
Ntuchiu however ruled out claims that they would bargain for a running mate position for Munya claiming the decision lies in the hands of the presidential candidates.
He however called on the next government to consider appointing Munya for any government position if not a running mate position.
“The government is big and he can continue as a cabinet secretary or any other job. Whoever is elected for the presidential position should consider giving him a job. We wish Munya well,” Ntuchiu added.
He however disregarded Munya’s sentiments that he will support only aspirants vying for the Meru governorship under the Azimio la Umoja movement noting that their focus is to strengthen the Development Empowerment Party (DEP).
“We believe that by making our DEP party strong is the only way that we are going to negotiate for our people,” Ntuchiu said.
Outgoing Meru County Government Chief of Staff Gideon Kimathi termed it a jovial moment adding that Munya’s decision will enable the two to work together.
“We are really happy that Munya has decided not to be on the ballot for the upcoming elections. This is a real opportunity from God for Munya and Kiraitu to work together,” Kimathi said
Mr Kimathi who resigned from Chief of Staff position and is eyeing South Imenti Parliamentary seat, called on Munya to team up with governor Kiraitu towards achieving more developments in Meru County.
According to Kimathi, teaming up of Munya and Kiraitu would strengthen the bargaining power of Meru County towards attaining a better share of the national cake.
Decision of Munya not to resign now leaves only Meru Woman Representative Kawira Mwangaza as the only contestant who has declared his intention to battle for gubernatorial seat with Mr Kiraitu.
Earlier speaking Munya had revealed that he will support any aspirant vying for the Meru governorship under the Azimio la Umoja movement. He further revealed that he will also be in the boardroom meetings crafting how his party, PNU, can strengthen its relationship with the Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja movement.
“I will support a candidate for governor’s seat in Meru, a candidate who is in Azimio and the one who will change Meru. I will also play a part in the national politics and will be active in strengthening PNU as we craft the party’s relationship with Azimio,” the CS said.
